Weekly Practice
BAPTISM OF THE LORD: Daily Examen
Scripture: Mark 1:4-11
NOT OFTEN DO we hear a voice from heaven affirming that we are seen, loved, and valued. But God is no less present to us than he was to Jesus—if we have the awareness to notice. Sometimes it is difficult to notice God in the present moment, but the practice of Daily Examen allows us to look back on our day to see with the clarity of hindsight. To practice the Examen this week, set aside three to five minutes at the same time every day. Use these steps to guide your reflection.
- Ask the Holy Spirit to join you as you review events of the last twenty-four hours.
- Focus on the day’s gifts and give thanks for them.
- Notice what emotions you felt. What is God saying to you in these feelings?
- Ask the Spirit to guide you to one particular event or emotion of the day that is important, and pray repentance, gratitude, or a request/petition accordingly.
- Ask for the Lord’s light to shine on tomorrow’s events and decisions.
