Weekly Practice

PRACTICING WITH SCRIPTURE: Lectio Divina

LATIN FOR “DIVINE reading,” Lectio Divina is an ancient tool that invites the reader (or hearer) to read slowly with space to listen. We invite the Holy Spirit to use these ancient words to speak unique and personal words to us. Begin by using 1 Corinthians 13, and allow about thirty to forty-five minutes for this practice.

  • Read the passage two times slowly, out loud if possible, with a few moments of silence in between. Listen for a word or phrase that sticks out to you, and make note of it.
  • Read through a third time, pausing when you come to the word or phrase you wrote down.
  • Put away the text, and ponder the word or phrase in silence. Turn it over in your mind, and see what memories or other scriptures come to mind.
  • Ask the Spirit to help you understand what God wants to say to you in these words. Why is this important for you now?
  • Rest in silence for a time.
  • Respond and give thanks. What do you need to do with what you have heard? Give thanks for the way the Spirit has communicated to you.
  • Record. Write down what you want to remember from this time.

Have a blessed week!
