PRACTICING WITH SCRIPTURE: Praying the Psalms

THE PSALMS WERE the prayer and songbook of the Jewish people. They were sung, memorized, and prayed in synagogues, homes, and at the temple. Jesus used many of these words to form his own prayers, and we can use them to shape our prayers as well. Read Psalm 46 slowly, using each phrase to give language to your own conversation with God about the specifics in your life. If these words about God are true, we can use them to ask God to be true to God’s character in our own situations. Consider these questions to guide you:

  • When have you experienced God’s help in times of trouble? (verse 1)
  • What situations, past or present, make you feel like the mountains are crumbling or the oceans roaring? (verses 2-3)
  • What wars do you need God to end? (verses 4-9)
  • Ask God to help you be still now. (verse 10)
  • When have you known God’s presence in your midst? (verse 11)

Have a blessed week!
