SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY: Exegeting Advertisements
Scripture: Luke 6:17-26
PREACHERS, TEACHERS, AND scholars are taught the elements of exegesis: careful analysis of the biblical text using historical, literary, and theological lenses in order to uncover a faithful meaning from the text. This week, practice using the same methods to find the meaning in advertisements that we see and hear everywhere. As you engage in this process, ask Jesus to help you see the truth of his kingdom clearly. Each time you see, hear, or read an advertisement this week, pause long enough to ask yourself or those around you these questions:
- According to this message, what does it mean to be blessed?
- Who is to be avoided or pitied (the unblessed)?
- Who is the intended recipient of this message?
- How does this message recommend that you achieve the blessedness defined by the ad?
- How does this message affirm or contradict the blessings and sorrows of God’s kingdom as described by Jesus?
Have a blessed week!
