Sermon Title: “Wilderness and Temptation”
Weekly Practice
FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT: Solitude
Scripture: Luke 4:1-14
THIS WEEK, CHOOSE to practice solitude thirty minutes daily, or for at least two hours in one day. This is not just a time to be alone but to be present to yourself without reading, music, or conversation. Toward the end of your time in solitude, journal about your experience—what you felt, heard, understood, how Jesus was present, and perhaps how he answered your question(s). Receive these words of guidance for your practice of solitude:
- While in solitude, ask Jesus this question: “Lord, what do you want to free me of?” and keep returning to this question when you feel your mind wander.
- You may feel anxious; you may think of a million things to do that would be a “better” use of your time. You may even feel guilty for “doing nothing.” Don’t take the bait. If the practice is challenging, you’re doing it right.
- Notice all that is in your mind and heart, but don’t rush into action. Simply observe what’s in you, and listen to what Jesus wants to say to you about it. The things that come to mind may be some of what Jesus wants to provide freedom from!
Have a blessed week!
