FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, AND SELF-CONTROL: The Art of Listening

WE HEAR A lot of sounds, but we rarely take the time to listen. In our daily lives, there is so much that demands our attention that we rarely listen to one another. Or we are too busy getting someone to listen to us that we don’t find time to listen to them. But when we do listen, we may be surprised by what we hear and what we are invited to participate in. This week, intentionally practice listening by doing some or all of the following:

  • Remind yourself that faces are more important than screens. Every time a person is in front of you, look at that person instead of your TV, phone, or computer.
  • Don’t talk over people. While in conversation, make an effort to think about what the other person is saying rather than trying to figure out what you’re going to say next.
  • Pay attention to your body language. Make eye contact, uncross your arms, and lean forward.
  • Repeat/clarify what you’ve heard by saying, “I think what you’re saying is…” Checking for clarification communicates that you really want to understand the other person.

Have a blessed week!
