SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT: Honoring Others’ Requests

Scripture: Mark 8:31-38

WHAT DOES IT look like to “take up our cross” to follow Jesus? While most of us will not be asked to give up our lives, the way of self-sacrifice is for all of us. This week, practice self-sacrifice in a small way by honoring the requests of others instead of doing things your way. As long as it does not harm yourself or another person, do what someone else prefers. If a request comes from a person you consider undeserving, remember you are not honoring the request for any other reason than obedience to Christ. Keep an open dialogue with Jesus about this, and notice what is happening within you with each request you honor. Requests come in all shapes and sizes, so make sure to include these common requests in your practice:

• Car with a blinker on asking to enter your lane
• Email asking a question, a favor, or a work order
• Voicemail or text asking for a call back
• Your children trying to get your attention
• The youth group kid asking for support of his mission trip
• A family member or spouse voicing concern or hurt
