FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT: Centering Prayer

Scripture: John 12:20-33

CHRISTIANS HAVE LONG practiced an ancient form of prayerful meditation known as hesychasm, contemplative prayer, centering prayer, or breath prayer. It is a simple practice of repeating a short prayer, scripture, or phrase to center ourselves in God’s presence and create stillness in our minds. As we become grounded in the truth of the words, we become more aware of God’s presence, and our desire to control our lives slowly subsides. This week, notice any time you feel frustrated or anxious—the telltale signs of losing control. Take this as your cue to practice centering prayer. Repeat your chosen phrase aloud or silently, following the rhythm of your breath, for as long as it takes to drown out the competing thoughts. Return to it as often as needed. Choose a phrase or short scripture that reminds you of truth, or you may want to use one of these as your centering prayer:

  • Come, Lord Jesus (inhale); come (exhale).
  • I was created from love (inhale), of love, and for love (exhale).
  • Perfect love (inhale) drives out fear (exhale). (1 John 4:18)

Have a blessed week!
